The town of Concrete, Wash., is nestled in the foothills of Washington's North Cascades. It's calm and peaceful. But it wasn't the night of Oct. 30, 1938. Panic swept the town as residents listened to Orson Welles' The War Of The Worlds radio broadcast of a mock Martian invasion. At the height of the drama a power outage plunged the town into darkness. People fainted. Others ran for the hills. I drove to Concrete but saw no signs of an alien attack, although the Ford truck and Texaco station north of Concrete on Highway 20 looked like they'd taken serious hits.
