Months ago I purchased a photographer's map of Palouse wheat country with directions to 150 prime locations. So what's the first thing I do on a four-day shoot here? Ditch the map. I ask Jesus to be my tour guide. Following His lead I turn left on a gravel road I've never been on. I head up a hill and see the outline of buildings. It's an abandoned farm (above). As I walk toward the barn I flush something big out of the tree next to me. It's a hawk with a wingspan as tall as me. The farm is frozen in time. The next day I drive through the town of Hay on a primitive road. The main attraction is a derelict gas station. On this trip there is a surprise at every turn.
