Wind turbines look like pinwheels on steroids. They are intimidating. Their cousin, the farm windmill, has the opposite personality: friendly, inviting, blue collar. Like this windmill in north-central Washington. The abandoned wheat farm includes several buildings in disrepair. The windmill, perched atop a pump house, is in surprisingly good condition for its age. The farmhouse was missing doors and windows, inviting me to step inside for a look. But I kept my distance. For all I knew the place was crawling with rattlesnakes. My view outside was just fine, thank you.
